6 tips to help you deal with discipline
- Develop simple and effective ways to avoid having conflicts with your child.
- Help control your child’s behavior by changing/manipulating their environment. (For example, if you have a toddler, you should place breakable or valuable objects that they may break, out of their reach.)
- If your child is exhibiting inappropriate behavior, sometimes the best thing to do is give them “no attention,” as long as the behavior is not dangerous to the child or others.
- Give your child consequences for their behavior. It is important to be consistent and to follow through with these consequences.
- Don’t forget to give rewards to your children for good behavior. Noticing good behavior, commenting on it, and a hug are great rewards.
- If you feel like you are going to lash out in anger, take a few deep breaths and/or call a supportive friend. After you have relaxed you will be better able to discipline your child effectively.
