Fostering Healthy Self-Esteem

Healthy self-esteem enables children to try new things without having too much fear of failing. Self esteem helps kids to reach out and make friends, and to manage problems they are likely to face.

Parents can help build self-esteem by:

  • Tell your children that you love them on a daily basis.
  • Spend time with your child, and listen to his/her point of view.
  • Support his/her school work. Take an interest without taking over.
  • Encourage your child’s friendships with other kids. Welcome and get to know his/her friends.
  • Help your child to explore any hobbies that she is interested in.
  • Expect your child to help with family chores. This will help your child to feel like a needed part of the family.
