How to Keep Your Child from Swearing

Your child is using foul language with his/her friends. What’s the best way to handle the situation?

  • Children will repeat things that they hear, even if they haven’t a clue about what it means. If your child is mimicking someone else, simply make a statement such as “That isn’t a word children use. You may say bologna instead.”
  • If an older child swears, and knows the intended meaning, you can respond in a calm manner: “ that language is unacceptable. I know your smart enough to come up with an acceptable alternative.”
  • Fine a child for each swear word you hear. The money can go into a pot and be given to your church or a local charity.
  • Remove privileges. Visiting friends? Riding their bike? Using the telephone?
